Guitar and Piano
Matthew Alley has been performing and teaching professionally for 9 years and is excited to be joining the faculty of the Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts this year. Born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Mr. Alley holds a BM in music performance from Winthrop University, an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of South Carolina Columbia, and an MA in Ethnomusicology from Indiana University Bloomington.
While earning his degrees, Mr. Alley participated in a number of university ensembles, including big bands, jazz combos, jazz and classical vocal groups, the Indiana University Soul Revue, and an African drumming and dance ensemble. He specializes in rhythm section instruments, playing guitar, keyboard, bass guitar, drums, and is also a singer.
Mr. Alley’s professional musical interests are similarly broad — he has performed with jazz, soul, blues, folk, rock, country, classical, and a cappella ensembles and he believes that the best musical education is a well-rounded one that includes multiple styles of playing. He is currently active in the Chicagoland music scene, performing regularly as a rhythm section musician and vocalist with groups and has recently released an album with an alternative soul band. He has also taught private lessons, college courses and music in a variety of classroom settings.
